What is Buccal Fat Removal?

The prominence and sharpness of the cheekbones play a significant role in facial aesthetics. The triangle formed by the cheekbones and the chin is referred to as the “youth triangle,” and the definition at these points greatly influences facial aesthetics.

At times, the lines created by the cheekbones become less defined, and individuals may develop rounder facial contours. This condition is not only related to excess weight but can also be influenced by genetic factors. While this appearance may be considered normal for a certain period after adolescence, it can later become aesthetically bothersome. In such cases, the treatment method that involves surgically removing a certain amount of fat tissue from the cheeks is called “buccal fat removal.”

How is Buccal Fat Removal Performed?

First, the individual is examined by a specialist physician to determine their suitability for the procedure. If buccal fat removal is not combined with another facial rejuvenation procedure, it is usually performed through the inside of the mouth. Local anesthesia is administered to the inner cheek tissue, where the procedure will take place. Then, a small incision is made to access the buccal fat pad, and a portion of this tissue is removed to enhance the prominence of the cheekbones. One of the most important aspects at this stage is achieving a similar appearance on both cheeks and ensuring the necessary symmetry. After achieving the desired result, the incision inside the mouth is closed with stitches. In some cases, the extracted fat tissue or other filler materials can be added to the area above the cheekbones to create sharper contours.

What Precautions Should Be Taken After Buccal Fat Removal?

Generally, individuals can return to their normal activities shortly after buccal fat removal. As with any surgical procedure, the physician may recommend the use of antibiotics, painkillers, and mouthwash. Some swelling and discomfort may be experienced for a few days after the operation. Cold compresses can help reduce the risk of swelling. Since the incision is made inside the mouth, attention should be paid to the doctor’s dietary instructions for a certain period. These discomforts usually subside within a week, and the treatment is completed with the removal of intraoral stitches. The full results of buccal fat removal can be observed approximately within six months.

Who Is Eligible for Buccal Fat Removal?

Buccal fat removal, or cheek reduction surgery, can be performed on anyone who is bothered by excess fat tissue in the cheeks, regardless of their weight. However, it is generally recommended for individuals who are at least 25 years old. This is because facial shapes are not fully settled until the age of 25, and cheek contours may vary until then. Beyond that age, there are typically minimal changes in facial shape and cheek structure.
