Root canal treatment is performed when the pulp is damaged due to infection, injury, or decay. The primary goal of the procedure is to preserve the tooth and restore its functionality.

During the procedure, the infected or inflamed pulp is removed, and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected. Then, the tooth is filled and sealed. Depending on the tooth, a crown may be required for protection and to restore its natural function and appearance.

Contrary to popular belief, root canal treatment is typically not painful since it is performed under local anesthesia. However, some mild discomfort may be experienced after the anesthesia wears off, which can be managed with over-the-counter or prescribed pain relievers.

It’s advisable to avoid smoking for at least several days after treatment, as smoking can impede the healing process and contribute to postoperative complications.
